The Father Troike Summer Leadership Program |
| The Fr. Edward W. Troike Program has been in existence since 1968. Countless young men throughout Brooklyn and Queens have spend their summer at Cathedral Preparatory Seminary in Elmhurst taking classes that will help them prepare for the Test for Admission to Catholic High Schools, improving their sports skills and making new friends. What makes this Program unique from all the other Summer Programs offered by Catholic High Schools in our city is that we're not only, but also! What exactly do we mean by this? We're not only a program that challenges our students academically and helps to prepare them for 8th Grade and High School (although we try our best to do so). We're not only a sports and activities camp that strives to teach our young men to be good winners and good losers (although we try our best to do so). We're not only a place where a young man daily can grow closer to Jesus and the Lord's individual call to him through prayer, Religion class and the Sacraments (although we try our best to help the Lord to do so). We're all these things, in order to serve you and the Lord! The key idea is leadership, responsibility and respect, all witnessed by the students, counselors, faculty and staff of the Troike Program. You are cordially invited to learn about the Troike Program to see if you might be enriched by this wonderful experience. For more information, contact Fr. John Cush at frcush@cathedralprepseminary.com or call us at (718) 592-6800 ext. 120 |

Fr. Troike Summer Leadership Program 2006
The Father Troike Summer Leadership Program was originally founded in 1968 as a response to the harrowing slaying of Robert F. Kennedy. In the 1960's, Kennedy had continually shown his concerns for various ethnic and social backgrounds through both his words and actions. In turn, the clergy and faculty of Cathedral Prep decided to open the doors of the Seminary to young men of various economic, ethnic and religious backgrounds, providing them with opportunities to further their academic and athletic skills and talents in a Catholic environment. And so began a 37-year tradition of nuturing the leadership skills of young men from various backgrounds in the NYC area. Fr. Edward Troike, originally a math teacher in the program, was one of the original clergymen to start the summer program. His endless faith, dedication, and service to the program and his modeling of Catholic values to all around him are only some of the numerous reasons the program was founded and continues under his name. This year, there were currently a total of 80 boys in the program, with 56 students returning to eighth grade classrooms in the fall and 24 prepared to begin their high school journey at Cathedral Prep. During the warm summer weeks, these students received comfort and support from faculty and fellow students, while taking classes in a variety of subjects including Religion, Computer Technology, Speech Skills, English, Math, and Grammar & Composition from 9:00am to 12:00pm. A 30-minute lunch period led these students to a variety of activities including basketball and softball, where they enjoyed socializing with one another while making new friends and growing athletically. What resulted at the close of the program at 2:00pm everyday was a well-rounded day undeniably focused on the values, traditions, and Catholic faith that permeate every inch of Cathedral Prep. On July 31st, the students who attended this year's Fr. Troike Summer Leadership Program not only left with a new idea of what it means to be a leader, but also and more importantly, they left the program with a new confidence in the reality that they are faith-filled individual leaders.
